Lungchow.—Farther west than Nanning, and situated on the Left River,
a tributary of the "West River, is Lungchow, opened as a treaty port in 1887, after the Franco-Chinese War. It has not yet been connected with Hanoi by rail, as intended, on account of the reluctance of the Chinese to give the French a foothold in KWANGSI. The terminus of the railway is over the border near Lang- son, but a road connects with Lungchow, 35 miles away.
