日本神話に登場する女神で、海神（綿津見神）の娘。彦火火出見尊（山幸彦）の妻であり、玉依姫命の姉かつ姑にあたる。産屋が完成する前に出産の時を迎え、鸕鷀草葺不合尊を産んだとされる。出産の際、本来の蛇（龍）に近い姿を夫に見られたことを恥じて海へ帰ったと伝えられる神格。
