The Geological Survey of China wrote in 1945 that at the Hsinsheng Colliery in Shensi Province (a small colliery in Paishui County) "miners hired by a contractor work 12 hour shifts, during which they are not allowed to stop work, except for relieving themselves; they have no days off and only a week's holiday a year" [88, p.325].]
