日本語の意味
古代日本の律令国家（大和政権）から見て、東北・北海道方面などに住んでいた異民族・辺境の民をさげすんで呼んだ言い方。蝦夷（えぞ・えみし）の意。 / 自分たちとは異なる文化・風俗をもつ外部の人々を「えびす」と呼んだことから、「辺境の民」「野蛮人」といった蔑称として用いられた語。 / （地名要素として）えびす／えみし に由来する字で、夷／蝦夷 の略字・俗字として地名・人名に用いられることがある。
