central retinal artery
(anatomy) A branch of the ophthalmic artery that passes to the retina in the middle of the optic nerve and branches to form the arterioles of the retina.
inferior thyroid artery
(anatomy) One of two arteries supplying the thyroid gland and nearby structures at the front of the neck that branches from the thyrocervical trunk and that divides to form branches supplying the inferior portion of the thyroid gland and anastomosing with the superior thyroid artery or with a corresponding branch from the opposite side.
transverse cervical artery
(anatomy) An inconstant branch of the thyrocervical trunk or of the subclavian artery that when present supplies or divides into branches supplying the region at the base of the neck and the muscles of the scapula.
superficial temporal artery
(anatomy) Either of the two terminal branches of each external carotid artery that pass upward over the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, and are distributed by way of branches especially to the more superficial parts of the forehead and sides of the head and face.
middle temporal artery
(anatomy) A branch of the superficial temporal artery that arises just above the zygomatic arch, sends branches to the temporalis muscle, and anastomoses with a deep temporal artery.
middle cerebral artery
(anatomy) An artery that arises from the internal carotid artery, passes along the lateral fissure, and supplies the lateral surfaces of the cerebral cortex.
posterior cerebral artery
(anatomy) An artery that arises by the terminal forking of the basilar artery where it forms the posterior portion of the circle of Willis and passes on to supply the lower surfaces of the temporal and occipital lobes.
anterior cerebral artery
(anatomy) An artery that arises from the internal carotid artery, forms the anterior portion of the circle of Willis where it is linked to the artery on the opposite side by the anterior communicating artery, and passes on to supply the medial surfaces of the cerebrum.
anterior communicating artery
(anatomy) One of the three arteries in the brain that form parts of the circle of Willis; it connects the anterior cerebral arteries.
superior cerebellar artery
(anatomy) An artery that arises from the basilar artery just before it divides to form the posterior cerebral arteries and supplies or gives off branches supplying the superior part of the cerebellum, midbrain, pineal gland, and choroid plexus of the third ventricle.
