日本語の意味

「not but」は、従属節を導入する古風な接続表現で、『～ではないというのは、すなわち…』という意味合いを持ちます。つまり、後に続く節が否定されていない事実を示すために用いられる表現です。

He accepted the verdict, not but that he had hoped for a different outcome.

彼は判決を受け入れた。とはいえ、別の結果を望んでいなかったわけではない。
