16～17世紀頃に日本人がポルトガルやスペインなど南方から来たヨーロッパ人、またはその文化・品物を指して用いた語。転じて、西洋人一般や西洋風のものを指すこともあるが、現代では差別的・蔑称的な響きをもつため注意を要する。 / 料理名「南蛮漬け」「チキン南蛮」などに見られる語で、南蛮由来・西洋風・唐辛子やねぎ・たまねぎなどを用いた風味付けの料理を指す要素として用いられる。
