A woman whose husband is missing or legally incompetent or who refuses to grant her a Jewish writ of divorce is traditionally referred to as a chained woman (agunah) and is unable to remarry. To prevent this situation, the Conservative Movement has created a t'nai b'kiddushin (prenuptial condition), written either as a separate codicil or as part of the Conservative k'tubbah (wedding document), which specifies that the groom agrees to provide a get if the marriage is dissolved in the civil court.
