The major island group, Pʻeng-hu, is devoted to fishing. (The Portuguese called them the Pescadores or Fishermen Islands.) This small archipelago was the point of entry of most of the Portuguese, Dutch, French and Japanese invasions. Because of the continued threat, Taiwan maintains numerous military installations on these islands as well as on others located in the strait between Pʻeng-hu and the mainland.
