In earlier works, what is here called S-structure was frequently referred to as ‘Surface Structureʼ; but in more recent work a crucial terminological distinction has been drawn between S-structure ( = the output of the Syntactic Component of our Grammar) and Surface Structure ( = the output of the Phonological Component).
