To allow the comparison of tracheidograms with different number of cells, we normalized the number of cells per tracheidogram to a constant number of cells (S2 Table ), using dedicated R functions (based on the tgram package for R [14 ]) that computes the relative position of each tracheid considering that all rings have the same number of cells.
