Occupational preference items are often corrected for “elevation response set”—the general tendency for respondents to prefer many or few occupations—by computing ipsatized items (e.g., subtracting from each item the individual’s mean rating on all items) (Lippa, 1998; Prediger, 1982; Tracey & Rounds, 1993).
