Lao-ho-k'ou was the headquarters of General Li Tsung-jen, commander of the Fifth War Area.…But physical privation was nearly universal and in many ways Lao-ho-k'ou was an interesting place to be. The Political Department of the Fifth War Area operated a Japanese language school there, with two hundred Chinese students in 1939. The classes were conducted by members of the Korean Volunteer unit and by Japanese prisoners of war who were sent to Lao-ho-k'ou for indoctrination. Lao-ho-k'ou was also the site of six industrial cooperatives which employed refugees in a variety of trades.
