The recent installation of satellite networks and high-capacity cable in the region has helped slow the widening of the relative gap (figure II.4), but the absolute gap nonetheless increased from 8.5 Mibps in 1996 to 10.7 Mibps in 2005 (17.4 Mibps versus 6.7 Mibps).
