December 3 1634, John Cotton, Letter to a Minister in England, ¶ 2; reprinted in:
Even during the last three days, while orders of the day from Army Group HQ, together with the whole Russian press, were lauding the 1st Army’s victory at Gumbinnen, Samsanov’s corps, advancing from the south, had never felt that somewhere beyond the forests and the lakes they had the support of Rennenkampf’s troops as they advanced from the east, or even of his numerous cavalry (five divisions), nor did they catch sight of any Germans fleeing from east to west.
'That's good,' said my soon-to-be-ex-brother-in-law. 'Kravitz said he was a solid guy, and well-connected too. How you feeling, anyway'? ¶ I suppressed a yawn. 'Rubber ducked,' I told him, lapsing in to Edinburgh rhyming slang.
