Antlers and horns have been the insignia of devils and black magicians from time immemorial, and are worn by present-day witch doctors.
Why, then, are we so wedded to the romantic illusion of authors as poor, tortured, hungry souls, labouring in unheated garrets until the day they are discovered and rewarded with fairy[-]tale fortunes of Rowlingesque proportions?
That being said, a tree that is too dense is like a window-less building – cold and dark, with no light emanating from within to create feelings of interior light, life or warmth. An open tree to me has these windows and therefore more interest and more ‘decoratability.’
