主として天文学や光学で使われる語。光源によって照らされた物体の影のうち、完全な暗部（本影）に対して、光が一部だけ遮られて薄暗くなっている部分を指す。日食や月食において、天体の影の外側に生じる薄暗い影の領域。比喩的に、はっきりとしない境界領域や、中間的・曖昧な立場や状態を表すこともある。
