日本の伝説上の想像上の生物で、魚（特に鯱鉾＝しゃちほこ）の姿をし、しばしば虎の頭と鯱の体を持つとされる。城郭建築では、屋根の棟の両端に取り付けられる装飾瓦「鯱（しゃちほこ）」として火除け・魔除けの意味を持つ。 / シャチ（orca）とは本来別語源だが、近代以降「鯱」の漢字がシャチにも当てられることが多く、その場合はクジラ目に属する海棲哺乳類・シャチを指す。
