日本神話における食物の女神。伊弉諾神の娘で、『古事記』において、天照大神の弟・素戔嗚尊が高天原を追放された際に、自らの身体の穴から食物を取り出してもてなしたところ、その行為を穢れと受け取った素戔嗚に斬り殺されたとされる女神。その遺体からは穀物や蚕などが生じ、神産巣日神によって集められ、人々の糧や養蚕の起源になったとされる。
