歴史的な用語としての「御家人」は、主君(特に将軍)に直接仕える武士、あるいは封建領主の家臣身分に属する武士を指す。鎌倉幕府・室町幕府などで、将軍と主従関係を結び、軍役などを奉仕する代わりに所領の安堵や新恩給与を受ける武士階層をいう。 / 特に鎌倉幕府において、将軍に直属し、軍役奉仕を義務とした武士身分の者を指す語。のち、室町・江戸時代にも類似の身分・呼称として用いられたが、時代により具体的な身分的内容や格式には差異がある。
