中国史および日本史において、「南朝」と「北朝」が並立・対立していた時代、またはその両朝を総称して指す呼称。 / 中国では一般に南北朝時代（宋・斉・梁・陳と、北魏・東魏・西魏・北斉・北周など）が対立した4世紀末〜6世紀末ごろの時代区分。 / 日本では14世紀の南北朝時代における、京都の北朝と吉野などの南朝という二つの朝廷（両統迭立期の両朝）をまとめて指す語。
