A potential explanation is that the favorable prognostic impact of PD-L1 upregulation in these conditions may indicate the presence of a mixed immune cell infiltrate containing cytotoxic and regulatory T cells and reflect a partially dysbalanced local cellular immune response, which still contributes to antitumor immune control.
