20世紀初頭に登場した改良型のプレドレッドノート戦艦の一種で、主砲が異なる口径の大砲で構成される。一般的には最大口径の大砲が4門搭載され、他にも複数の小型大砲を装備しており、旧来のプレドレッドノート艦より優れているが、1906年に登場した本格的なドレッドノート艦ほどの火力は持たない。
