Et de quoi se composent les masses? De paysans, d’ouvriers travaillant la plupart du temps onze heures et même douze heures par jour. Ils rentrent au logis si exténués de fatigue, qu’ils ont peu envie de lire des brochures ou des journaux socialistes; ils dorment, se promènent ou consacrent leurs soirées à la famille... Eh bien, s’il y avait un moyen d’attirer l’attention de ces hommes, de leur montrer ce qu’ils ne peuvent pas lire, de leur apprendre le socialisme par les faits, en le lui faisant voir, sentir, toucher? Il arrive souvent que tel qui ne comprend pas un tableau, comprend une statue; si la peinture se voit, la sculpture se touche. Quand ce raisonnement a été fait, n’importe qui l’a fait! on a été sur le chemin de faire, à côté de la propagande théorique, la propagande par le fait. La propagande par le fait est d’abord un puissant moyen de réveiller la conscience populaire. Prenons un exemple. Qui connaissait en France, avant la Commune de Paris, le principe de l’autonomie communale? Personne. Et cependant, Proudhon avait écrit de magnifiques ouvrages. Qui lisait ces livres ? une poignée de lettrés. Mais quand l’idée a été posée au grand soleil, en pleine capitale, sur les marches de l’hôtel-de-ville, qu’elle eut pris corps et vie, elle alla secouer le paysan dans sa chaumière, l’ouvrier à son foyer, et paysans et ouvriers durent réfléchir devant ce point d’interrogation immense dressé sur la place publique. Maintenant l’idée a fait son chemin. En France, dans le monde entier, pour ou contre, chacun a pris son parti. Pour ou contre, on est fixé.

OF WHAT DO THE MASSES CONSIST? Of peasants, workers, most of the time toiling eleven and even twelve hours per day. They make their way home worn out from fatigue and have little inclination to read socialist pamphlets or newspapers: they sleep, they go for a stroll or devote their evenings to the family. Well, what if there is a way of grabbing these people's attention, of showing them what they cannot read, of teaching them socialism by means of actions and making them see, feel, touch? It often happens that someone who does not understand a painting, understands a statue; if the painting is seen, the sculpture is touched. When one resorts to that line of reasoning one is on the trail that leads, beside theoretical propaganda, to propaganda of the deed. Propaganda of the deed is a mighty means of rousing the popular consciousness. Let us take an example. Prior to the Paris Commune, who in France was conversant with the principle of communal autonomy? No one. Yet Proudhon had written magnificent books. Who read those books? A handful of literati. But once the idea was brought out into the open air, in the heart of the capital, onto the steps of the City Hall, when it took on flesh and life, it shook the peasant in his cottage, the worker at his fireside, and peasants and workers alike had to reflect on this huge question mark posted in the public square. Now that idea made inroads. In France, around the entire world, for or against, everybody has picked his side.
