音声学における用語で、母音発音時に舌の位置が、完全に閉じた状態（高い位置）と完全に開いた状態（低い位置）の間、約2/3の位置で発音されることを示す。 / 母音の発音に関して、舌の位置が閉じ気味と開放気味の中間、やや閉じた位置であることを表す用語。
