四分の一波長板とは、複屈折性材料からなる薄板であり、その厚さが、大きい屈折率に対応する光の位相を、より小さい屈折率に対応する光に比べて90度遅延させるように設計されている。これにより、線形偏光を円偏光に変換するために利用される。
