ノコギリのように長く突き出た吻（ふん）をもつサメの仲間。主に温帯〜熱帯の大陸棚域に生息し、吻の左右に並ぶ鋭いトゲ状の歯で砂底の小魚や甲殻類を叩きつけて捕食する海水魚。 / ノコギリエイと混同されることがあるが、ノコギリエイはエイの仲間であり、本種（ノコギリザメ）はサメの仲間である点で異なる。
