吽（うん）は、梵字の「हूँ」「हूं」（フーン）などに相当する音写で、密教や仏教における真言・種子字として用いられる文字である。日本語としては単独で一般語の「吠える」「うなる」といった意味ではあまり使われないが、仁王像の「阿吽（あうん）」の一部として、「阿」に対する「吽」の字があてられている。 / 「阿吽（あうん）」の「吽」は、口を閉じて発する最後の音を象徴し、「阿」が最初、「吽」が最後を表すことから、宇宙・森羅万象の始まりと終わり、呼気と吸気、開と閉などを象徴する語として用いられる。 / 梵語音写としての「吽」は、真言・陀羅尼などで「フン」「フーン」「ウン」といった発音を示す記号的な文字であり、日本語の語彙として意味内容を持つというより、宗教儀礼における聖音（マントラの一部）としての機能的な役割を持つ。
