The fear of intermixers was not new, nor was the dread of native customs and culture. The hostility to the purveyors and symbols of native barbarity – the language, dress, manners, bards, poets, harpers, and others – was expressed in the Statutes of Kilkenny and resurrected in 1536 during the Kildare rebellion.
