In recent years the defeat of the U.S. long-distance passenger train by its competitors has often been quoted as a lesson to Britain. Dieselisation did not save it: therefore, it is argued (without reference to the very different conditions of inter-city travel in this country), modernisation of main-line B.R. passenger services is money ill-spent.
