In this connection, I take note of the earlier theories of Curt Sachs, postulating three kinds of origins for melodic traditions: "logogenic," from language; "pathogenic," from motion; and "melogenic," from music (Sachs 1937, pp. 181-203; 1943, pp. 30-43).
