The Outer city, also known as the Chinese city, was added during the reign of the emperor Chia Ching (1522-66) of the Ming dynasty. It is in the form of an oblong adjoining the Inner city. with walls 14 mi. in length, including 4 mi. of the southern wall of the Inner city.
