If you're going to do an actual fanventure, as in, based on the MSPA source material, then I think the best advice is to still first and foremost make it good based on it's own merits. Whether it's the story, the characters, the writer/reader interaction, the humor; if you take away the MSPA elements and it can still be enjoyable then you've done well.
