My solution was 2fold, 1st, I set up the modem not to talk too much and only blurp 'CONNECT'. 2nd, I changed the dailer file to connect at the getty speed set in the /etc/inittab when it saw 'CONNECT'.
A repeater signal may be used where the track geometry makes the main signal difficult to read from a distance.
