The Late Mesozoic (Late Jurassic to Late Cretaceous) could represent a peak in planktic productivity as indicated by the evolution of very large deposit-feeding nerineoidean gastropods which reached lengths of 50 cm beginning in the Late Jurassic [70 ], and by a size maximum in suspension-feeding bivalves in the Late Cretaceous (Table 1 ) and of suspension-feeding gastropods (Gigantocapulus schmitti, length 400 mm) [71, 72 ].
