The bare and grassy Elk Mountain 12er stands to the north, contrasted by ragged 13ers to the east rising above Mayflower Gulch, an impressive lineup including Crystal, Atlantic and Pacific Peaks, Fletcher Mountain and Drift Peak.

Yet the worst aspect of this “bust” nomer, and why 13ers resent it, is how it plants today's 25-year-olds squarely where they don't want to be: in the shadow of the “boom[.]”
