典礼の儀式の際に、祭壇や聖職者が東（礼拝の正面、すなわち信徒側と反対の方向）を向くという概念を示す。 / 教会の礼拝で、通常、信徒側から背を向ける形で東側を向く配置を意味する。

荘厳なミサの間、司祭は典礼上の東を向いて祈りを唱え、祭壇の方へ、すなわち会衆から離れる方向へと礼拝を導いた。
