In general, compounds having a brenzcatechin moiety were found to be active, but also cytotoxic against host cells due to oxidation and formation of a highly reactive Michael system, whereas analogue compounds without the 3,4-dihydroxy substitution at the phenyl ring (e.g. compound 1 ) were still active but less toxic.
