表皮の一層で、顆粒層と基底層の間に位置し、細胞同士が棘（スパイン）状の接着を形成している層、いわゆる「棘層」と呼ばれる部分です。 / 皮膚の構造内で、角化過程の途中にある層で、細胞の形状が棘状に見えることからこの名称がついています。
