銀河 – 天文学において、恒星、惑星、星間物質などが集まった巨大な天体系を指す。特に、歴史的な文脈では天の川銀河そのものを意味していた。

初期の天文学者たちは、天の川をまるで唯一の恒星の島であるかのように語り、その外に無数の他の銀河が存在するとは気づいていませんでした。
